While a growing number of women are motivated to improve their sex lives and feel better about themselves, many don't know where to turn or may feel too embarrassed to discuss this issue with friends, family or even a health care provider. What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty also referred to as labioplasty, or aesthetic vaginal surgery, is a surgical procedure that will reduce and/or reshape the labia minora(inner labia) and the labia majora(outer labia) - the skin that covers the female clitoris and vaginal opening. The size, color, and shape of a woman's labia vary significantly between women and may change as a result of childbirth, aging and other events. A labiaplasty can also address congenital defects and abnormalities such as vaginal atresia, malformed uterus & fallopian tubes and inter-sex conditions. It is also used to repair damage from tearing and stretching during childbirth.
Why to consider Labiaplasty?
Well some women are born with an enlarged labia and therefore opt to have the procedure, whereas others develop the enlargement with age or from child-birth. Occasionally, a woman is self-conscious of her labia since childhood. In some instances, a woman with a large labia can experience pain during intercourse, or feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Others may feel unattractive, or wish to enhance their sexual experiences by removing some of the skin that covers the clitoris. The purpose of a labiaplasty is to better define the inner labia. Surgical labial reduction can greatly improve the aesthetic appearance of the abnormally enlarged labis.
About the procedure:
The labiaplasty or labioplasty is a relatively minor surgery and is not very uncomfortable. The procedure takes about 2 hours and is performed with intense magnification to assure an accurate approximation of the normal labial edges. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia.
What to expect after the procedure:
After surgery, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which will usually disappear after 1-2 weeks. Resting and staying off your feet for the first few days following the procedure are recommended.You cannot use tampons, or wear tight clothes (e.g. thong underwear), and must abstain from sexual intercourse for four to six weeks following the surgery.
What are the risks?
As with any surgical procedure there are certain risks. While there are few associated with Labiaplasty, the most common can include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, and scarring. Although these events are usually infrequent, they sometimes can occur. These will be discussed with you during the consultation for your procedure.
