Uterine Fibroids

Nearly 30% of all women suffer from Uterine Fibroids. Symptoms related to uterine fibroids include heavy vaginal bleeding, secondary anemia, abdominal distension, infertility, and increased miscarriage rates. Uterine fibroids, however, may grow enormous in size. (see insert) Both medical and surgical options are available to manage the symptoms due to uterine fibroids. Lupron injections may serve as a temporary measure to halt excessive vaginal bleeding which may allow an improvement of severe anemia. Furthermore, Lupron injections may shrink uterine fibroid size by nearly 40%. However, surgical intervention such as myomectomy or hysterectomy may be indicated if clinical symptoms warrant. Uterine Artery Embolization is a relatively new procedure that may show promise with select cases. Despite the severe symptoms related to uterine fibroids, diagnosing uterine fibroids is relatively straight forward. Ultrasound is a simple and painless non radiation imaging modality used to diagnose uterine fibroids.
